DESIGNED FOR HIGHEST EFFICIENCY UNDER VARIABLE LOADS

Lightstream Turbo II chillers are designed with efficiency optimization through the use of Turbocor oil-free centrifugal compressors featuring magnetic bearing technology and variable speed drive.

The chillers deliver better full-load and part-load efficiencies than oil-lubricated compressors of any type and demonstrate high levels of energy efficiency over the lifecycle with no degradation of performance. Quiet operation, compactness, reliability are other advantages of these Turbocor-based chillers, while low start-up current of 2 amp enables significant cost savings for power supply and distribution components.

The chillers can be configured for variable or constant primary flow systems and optionally equipped with hydronic modules with variable- or fixed-speed pumps. Additionally, Lightstream Turbo II chillers can be fitted with an integrated, high-performance free cooling system.

The use of Ecodesign Tier-2 (2021) compliant Lightstream Turbo II chillers substantially contributes to achieving LEED™ (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification for existing buildings and new constructions.

Turbocor compressor

TURBOCOR COMPRESSORS

EXCELLENT ENERGY EFFICIENCY ACROSS ENTIRE OPERATING RANGE

Turbocor compressors offer outstanding energy savings from digitally controlled, frictionless two-stage centrifugal compression and guarantee significant reductions in operating cost at full and partial loads – thank permanent magnet motor and variable-speed drive.

Oil-free magnetic bearing technology and variable-speed drives deliver extraordinary energy efficiency at both partial and full loads, operate quietly, simplify chiller design by eliminating oil management while excluding performance degradation over time. Turbocor compressors require only 2 amps for startup, enabling further savings on the power supply system and reducing mechanical and electrodynamic stresses on the power cables and electrical distribution network.

LAST-GENERATION EVAPORATORS

Lightstream Turbo II chillers can be equipped with either flooded-type or low-charge falling film evaporators with improved heat transfer characteristics.

FLOODED EVAPORATOR

A flooded evaporator provides optimum system efficiency at both full and partial load operations. Compared to a shell-and-tube evaporator, the tubes in the flooded evaporator are immersed in a liquid refrigerant, enabling a closer temperature approach between the refrigerant temperature in the shell and chilled water temperature in the tubes to be achieved. With a flooded evaporator, the compressors operate at higher saturated evaporation temperatures and generate more cooling capacity with equal power input.

FALLING FILM EVAPORATOR

Falling film evaporators featuring refrigerant distribution through a spray arrangement above the tube bundle to create a thin film of liquid around the tubes. This type of evaporator permits operation with close approach temperatures between the refrigerant and process fluid and provides high heat transfer coefficients. Falling film evaporators require 25% less refrigerant charge than flooded-type – without compromising the system’s capacity and energy efficiency.

EC-motor fan

AXIAL FANS

HIGH-EFFICIENT EC-DRIVEN FANS

As standard, Lightstream Turbo II chillers are supplied with ErP 2020 compliant, EC-driven, aerodynamically optimized axial fans in lightweight housings and with guide vanes to reduce sound emissions and maximize airflow. Impellers with profiled blade geometry and winglets harmonized with the fan motor contribute to the highest energy efficiency.

Fans feature monitoring functionally via Modbus, integrated thermal overload and locked-motor protection, and low-temperature bearings ensure smooth and trouble-free fan operation under low ambient conditions.

MICROCHANNEL CONDENSER COILS

Significant refrigerant charge reduction by up to 50% achieved for Lightstream Turbo II with the use of microchannel condenser coils with multiport tubes having orifices of sub-millimeter diameter, which dramatically decrease the internal volume of the coil.

Brazed joints provide low contact resistance and, in combination with large heat transfer surfaces, enable high heat transfer characteristics for Lightstream Turbo II chillers.

Improved corrosion resistance is another advantage inherent in microchannel coil technology. Heat exchanger components are made of long-life aluminum alloys with a zinc arc spray finish. Additional corrosion protection required for installations in highly polluted zones or coastal applications can be achieved with epoxy electrophoretic or trivalent chromium process coatings available optionally.

  • Higher heat transfer rates enable lower condensing temperatures and result in energy savings on compressors
  • Low air resistance leads to reduced fan power draw and lowers noise output
  • Improved corrosion resistance of all-aluminum condensers increases the service life of the chillers
  • Short airflow paths result in less fouling of heat exchangers
  • Lower refrigerant charge, up to 50%

CONTROLS AND SOFTWARE

The control system is based on a high-speed controller equipped with the latest microprocessor. The control software has been developed with a focus on energy-efficient operation for Turbocor-based, multi-compressor air-cooled chillers. To achieve the best possible efficiency for multi-compressor chillers, compressor management software constantly monitors the actual cooling demand and selects the most efficient combination of the compressors. The software regulates optimum rotation speed, compression ratio, and positions the inlet guide vanes and controls bypass valves.

Giving complete control over the system for the plant operator, the chiller software manages and optimizes the chiller’s performance according to cooling demand and ambient conditions, generates safety and security alarms, supports interlinked, coordinated operation of multiple units, provides diagnostics and run statistics, and allow easy integration with any BMS protocols.

ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION

LOWER GWP REFRIGERANTS

The proposed phase-down of HFC refrigerants has prompted an assessment of alternative fluids for a wide range of applications, including medium-temperature air-cooled chillers.

In parallel with R134a, we offer a selection of lower GWP gases for Lightstream Turbo II: R1234ze with ultralow GWP of just 6, R513a, and R515b.

With low-GWP refrigerants and low-volume microchannel condensers and falling film evaporators, Lightstream Turbo II is an undoubted leader in environmental sustainability while achieving the best energy performance levels in applications.

OPTIONALS

Being feature-rich in standard, Lightstream Turbo II is highly configurable for different customer requirements and facility layout needs – thanks to numerous available accessories and options. The chillers are available in three grades of noise elimination, can be configured with low- or high-ambient kits, and charged with refrigerants R134a, R513a, R515b, or ultralow-GWP refrigerant R1234ze. Optional components also include:

  • Hydronic kit with single or twin pumps, equipped with variable or fixed-speed drives
  • Free cooling system w/ bypass and regulating valves
  • Single or dual refrigeration circuit
  • Refrigerant leak detectors
  • Control and connectivity options
  • Dual power input and redundancy options
  • Accessories for servicing

INTEGRATED FREE COOLING

Free cooling version provides low energy cooling and enables significant savings at low-ambient conditions. In mild temperature conditions, when the ambient temperature drops below the return water temperature, the free cooling system operates in parallel with mechanical cooling, maximizing energy savings. Through the use of microchannel cooling coils, the air temperature at which the free cooling system provides 100% cooling demand is higher by 3°C to 5°C  compared to heat exchangers of other types. The flow through the cooling coils is controlled through a 3-way mixing valve managed by the chiller software.
